St Francis Church, Melbourne

This beautiful Catholic church is the oldest in Victoria. The front porch you can see, was added later, as was the Lady Chapel to the left of the picture.

In the Digger’s Daughter, Jane remembered the consecration taking place in the early 1840s. Inside, the ceiling and walls, up to a certain height, are covered in wooden tiles.

Surrounded by high rise buildings it offers an oasis of calm in the busy city.
